About Me

I've been doing music for over half my life, and I've been teaching it in various capacities for the past 5-6 years now. I've truly been lucky to have gained lots of exposure in my teenage years and I've honed my skills and interest in multiple musical styles and roles across the board, be it as a singer, an instrumentalist, a teacher, or even more recently, as a rapper and producer. I have a very vast and diverse experience listening to and performing all kinds of genres and styles, including but not limited to jazz, metal, hip hop, rock, pop, blues, etc. I've spent over 5 years in a cappella choirs, and have been a member of various bands in different capacities over the past decade; I sing, I play and I can teach many instruments like the ukulele, keyboard, bass guitar, among others. I’m currently making my own music as a rapper and singer-songwriter, drawing from a variety of styles and influences (jazz, lofi, avant-garde hip hop, and more), and you can check out my work on all streaming platforms under Yuvraj Mehra

Courses Offered

Singer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist with a very thorough knowledge of music theory. I can teach you any and all of these things, you choose!

**Proceeds from the first class (and every subsequent tenth class) of every new student will be donated to charity** My methodology will only be as good for me as it is for you, which is why I prefer to teach in a dynamic yet systematic manner; instead of imposing a hard and fast 'syllabus' or 'curriculum' on my students, I prefer to chat with you, assess your needs and set learning goals according to your personal aspirations. Whether you want to learn how to build basic scales and chords, or complex jazz harmony; singing simple notes correctly, or fluent vocal improvisation; creating coherent musical ideas, writing full-blown songs, or even just learning how to perform your favourite songs, we can cover it all. Genre is no bar. I listen to and can teach an assortment of styles including but not limited to jazz, pop, rock, blues, hindi music, RnB, and metal. My methodology and content are very adaptive with the individual student's interests in mind. Always best to teach people what they want to learn, isn't it? I've been teaching for the past 5-6 years too; I teach singing, songwriting, and music theory (applicable for players of every instrument) at the beginner and intermediate levels. We can cover everything from the most basic elementary chord and scale building, all the way to composing in and understanding complex jazz harmony, blues cadences, pop and rock harmony, and anything else in between that you may want to explore. The same goes for singing: we can explore how to find your voice's comfort zones, analyse your capabilities, and expand them with a dynamic and adaptive approach catered to your voice. Our goal will be equipping you with the knowledge and skills that you need to be able to perform all that music that you enjoy listening to and singing along with! Through the cultivation of an intricate knowledge of music theory, I can teach you how to pick up any instrument of your choice, and develop a comfortable understanding of it much sooner than you'd expect. We'll make it easier than you'd think!

More About Me

Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

My journey with music actually began quite strangely. I was 11 years old at the time and had just joined 6th grade; everyone in school was required to select an extracurricular activity that they would take as a mandatory class. I had initially joined Taekwondo for the first couple of months and very quickly realised that running and exercising in the sweltering heat was certainly not going to be my cup of tea. My best friend had joined the western music classes and told me to change my activity and join him there instead because the western music rooms were among the very few rooms in our school that had ACs. Of course, I was sold and decided to join in the interest of my physical comfort. The rest, as they say, was history; I never even realised when I fell in love with music, and it's been a decade and a half since then.

What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

After I finished high school in 2015, I had taken a gap year to figure out what I wanted to do next. In the meanwhile, I was looking for ways to keep myself occupied and productive. A friend of mine was in a similar situation and was teaching English classes at an NGO that offered free classes across various subjects for whoever was interested to learn. I thought I could try my hand at teaching music lessons, and consequently, I volunteered with the organisation. It was an unexpectedly amazing experience and I learned that not only am I able to teach, I also quite enjoy it too.

How does your work help society?

I have a personal policy of donating 10% of my earnings to charity. Starting from the very first class itself, the proceeds of every 10th class (1st class, 11th class, 21st, etc, etc) are directly donated to charity. I always keep an eye out for fundraisers and worthy causes, and I also provide proof of payment to my students; by learning with me, you are also helping to regularly give back to society, which is perhaps more important now than it ever has been.

If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

To be completely honest, I do not have a particular answer for this question. There are plenty of people who do good work across various fields, and I think one can safely take inspiration from all kinds of stories, big or small, known or relatively unknown. Perhaps it isn't necessary to idolise someone/something in order to learn from them.

Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

Well, of course, there's music! I enjoy playing and singing, mostly by myself but often with my friends as well. Discovering new music, writing some of my own, trying to learn a bit more, day by day. Outside music, I really like watching movies, playing video games, eating different kinds of food. Lots and lots of eating. I also write some material for standup comedy every now and then, but so far that's mostly just been on paper. Additionally, I am a law student, so that certainly takes up some of my time too!

Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

There are quite a few, but I think I'll leave those for my students to hear, see you in class!
