Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?
I teach the English language. For me the reasons I want to become an English teacher were fairly simple, revolving around the idea of doing a job related to English which was the language that I love, and being able to earn a living with that job. I was also into teaching at the time I made the decision because of the inspiration I got from an English teacher. He was really kind and explained things in an easy way to understand. So I was inspired, I liked the teacher, I love the language, and I decided to become a teacher of English at the age of 15. So far, I have been enjoying the job and I could say being an English teacher is a good job. This job gives way to many other opportunities thanks to language competence and the flexibility of the nature of the job.
What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?
There have been many factors that have inspired me to this career choice. Watching my teachers has inspired me to become a teacher. I have a genuine interest in lifelong learning and as such, I have the desire to not only instill knowledge and values in others but also encourage them to share my passion for learning.
How does your work help society?
Teachers support the community by helping their students to learn to be good members of the community. As a teacher, that's where my obligation lies. I don't have a special obligation to the community at large that any other person doesn't also have. To my students, I do feel an obligation to support them beyond the classroom to the extent possible. It is important for students to see their teachers at plays, concerts, and competitions as it helps them to see that you do care about them and their success outside of the classroom.
If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?
My Inspiration, My Role Model, My TeacherA good teacher is one that motivates the students to always keep trying and do their best. However, an ethical and virtuous teacher is one who changes a student's life forever and shapes their character into becoming a successful and respectful human being. Teachers have an important part in our lives and they impact us every day. Not only do they teach us something new each passing day, but they also give us lessons that we will use in every decision we make in our lives. Luckily, I was able to have a teacher who pushed me beyond all my limits and always believed in me. That marvelous teacher was my tenth-grade teacher, Mrs. Nalini.Mrs. Nalini was not only my teacher, but she was also my role model and my inspiration. She pushed me when I believed that I could not achieve success or meet my goals. I never had confidence in myself and I would always give up easily when a task was too difficult. However, Mrs. Nalini never gave up on me and continued to motivate me.
Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.
Apart from teaching, I usually spend my leisure time reading books. I like reading new and trending novels and my favourite genres include suspense, horror, and thriller novels. Being a voracious reader, I believe that I have a strong vocabulary and knowledge of grammar.
Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?
I used the Hindi language as a medium of instruction to teach English in grade one for a better understanding of learning English. Our students come from Hindi language backgrounds. They have no more English language exposure at home and in other places due to the majority of Hindi language spoken in society. When I use Hindi as a medium of instruction in English class, they get motivated and get interested in learning, they interact with me without any hesitation, fear, or frustration. Teaching English by using the Hindi language has played a vital role in students' learning of English. I experienced that using the mother tongue as a medium of instruction in teaching English has become fruitful, helpful, and meaningful learning.
